Small Group Study Guide
Session Six: Take Advice from Those You Serve
This session is based on chapter six of the “Someone Like You” book (pg. 77)
Start the session by watching the session six video featured above (15 mins) – you may wish to take notes during the video.
Icebreaker and Discussion
1. What’s some of the best advice you’ve ever received, and how have you put it into practice? Have you ever gotten good advice from an unexpected source?
2. What prevents people from having or maintaining a humble attitude? Which do you witness more often: selfishness or humility?
3. It’s estimated that over 27 million people globally are victims of human trafficking, which represents a $150 billion industry. Have you discovered ways to help these victims, or met people who battle this injustice? Describe.
Video Review
4. What stood out to you during Stephen’s story of founding Dignity Made?
5. What types of things can we learn from the people we serve?
6. Make a list: come up with as many examples as you can of moments in scripture when Jesus modeled humility and servanthood.
7. What caught your attention during Erik’s stories of impact and the typhoon?
Scripture Exploration
8. Read Philippians 2:3-11. Think of a famous person whom you admire. How would you treat them if they were a guest in your home?
9. How might things be different if we, as Christians, always treated each other this way?
10. What else from this passage stands out to you?
11. Read John 13:3-17. Why was this act so significant and outrageous?
12. What did Jesus mean by what he said in verse 14?
Application and Closing Thoughts
13. Do you know someone with the business acumen and resources to build a company like Dignity Made that helps people in need? If so, note this as a prayer request and consider speaking to them about it.
14. What are some ways you can “look to the interests of others,” or meet needs, in your church community? Make a list.
Prayer Time
Take turns having each person in your small group share prayer requests, then close your time by praying over these requests. Make a special note to pray for victims of human trafficking in your nation and around the world. Optionally, a volunteer can take notes and send them to group members or share them in such a way that everyone can edit and access them. This allows your group to continue praying over these requests throughout the week.
