Small Group Study Guide
Session One: Every Story Has a Beginning
This session is based on chapter one of the “Someone Like You” book (pg. 1)
Start the session by watching the session one video featured above (18 mins) – you may wish to take notes during the video.
Icebreaker and Discussion
1. What’s a big chain store or restaurant that you genuinely enjoy? Have you ever explored how they got started? Take a moment and see if you can find their story online.
2. Have you ever struggled with impostor syndrome? Describe your experience.
3. Have you ever started something new? Share the story, including any success you had or challenges you faced. How did you feel when you first got started?
4. Scripture is filled with stories of individuals who seemed totally unqualified to do God’s work. Can you think of any examples? Make a list and explain why you chose each person.
Video Review
5. Today’s video included short segments about seven different organizations and their founders. What stood out to about the various founders as a whole? What did they have in common?
6. Was there a particular moment or founder in the video that stood out to you? Did you learn something new? Describe.
Scripture Exploration
7. Read 2 Corinthians 12:7-10. What do you think Paul is talking about when he mentions a “thorn” in his flesh?
8. Paul goes on to say, “when I am weak, then I am strong.” In the context of faith in Jesus, what does this mean and how do we put this into practice?
9. How does Paul’s life demonstrate God’s tendency to work through unlikely individuals? You can find his conversion story in Acts chapter nine.
Application and Closing Thoughts
10. If you’re honest, do you believe God could do something incredible through your life? Why or why not?
11. Is there something you feel called to do, but haven’t started yet? Share your thoughts and note this as a prayer request.
12. Is there a great organization where you’ve volunteered? Share your experience. Is this a place where your small group could serve together?
Prayer Time
Take turns having each person in your small group share prayer requests, then close your time by praying over these requests. Optionally, a volunteer can take notes and send them to group members or share them in such a way that everyone can edit and access them. This allows your group to continue praying over these requests throughout the week.
