Session Eight: Make a Plan

PDF Download

This session is based on chapter eight of the “Someone Like You” book (pg. 117)

Start the session by watching the session eight video featured above (15 mins) – you may wish to take notes during the video.

Icebreaker and Discussion

1. Would you consider yourself a planner, or do you prefer spontaneity? Explain.

2. Have you ever been part of an event or gathering that was poorly organized? What issues did this cause, and how did you feel about it?

3. There are roughly 100,000 children in the US foster care system who are waiting to be adopted because their parents have lost their parental rights. Why do you think this problem is so extensive? Do you have any experience with kids in foster care, or the families who care for them?

Video Review

4. What stood out to you from Kaycee’s stories?

5. Why is it important to have plans and structure when serving and working with other people?

6. When is it important to set our plans aside? How do we recognize when that moment arrives?

7. Kaycee had a valuable interaction with someone who held very different beliefs. Do you feel it’s important to interact with people who hold views and beliefs that are different from your own? Why or why not?

Scripture Exploration

8. Read Acts 6:1-7. What is this story about, and why do you think it’s included in scripture? Search for Biblical commentaries about this passage if necessary.

9. What are some ways your church community organizes people to serve those in need? Make a list.

10. Read James 4:13-17. What caution does James provide in this passage about making plans? What steps can we take to follow his advice?

11. Verse 17 includes a bold statement. What does this mean for us as followers of Jesus?

Application and Closing Thoughts

12. Make a list of things you’ve learned throughout the course of these small group sessions.

13. Coming out of this series, do you plan to do anything different or new that you weren’t doing before? If so, note these items as prayer requests.

Prayer Time

Take turns having each person in your small group share prayer requests, then close your time by praying over these requests. Make a special note to pray for children in foster care, especially those waiting to be adopted. Optionally, a volunteer can take notes and send them to group members or share them in such a way that everyone can edit and access them. This allows your group to continue praying over these requests throughout the week.
