Session Four: Ask for Help

PDF Download

This session is based on chapter four of the “Someone Like You” book (pg. 41)

Start the session by watching the session four video featured above (13 mins) – you may wish to take notes during the video.

Icebreaker and Discussion

1. Would you consider yourself an introvert or an extrovert? Explain.

2. Do you find it difficult to ask for help? Why or why not?

3. Have you met or do you know someone with Down syndrome? Share your experience.

4. Have you witnessed negative bias toward other groups of people?

Video Review

5. Was there a particular moment during Carissa’s story of founding Jack’s Basket that stood out to you?

6. Why should followers of Jesus strive to change negative bias toward people?

7. Do you think it’s true that we need other people in order to unlock our full potential? Provide examples.

8. How can isolation be destructive to a person’s mental and physical health?

9. How has your church community made a positive impact in your life?

Scripture Exploration

10. Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-27. Which parts of this passage catch your attention?

11. This passage deals with many different situations: a sense of belonging, God’s design, diversity of gifts, apparent weakness, honor, suffering, and rejoicing. Based on this passage, share examples of how each of these items might be addressed in a church community.

12. Read Ephesians 2:4-10. How might this passage, particularly verse 10, influence our perspective of ourselves and others?

Application and Closing Thoughts

13. What skills and abilities do you possess which may be useful to an organization or ministry? Consider carefully and make a list. Even simple things can make a huge impact!

14. Is there something you can do to increase your involvement with your church community? Additionally, is there something you need help with but have been hesitant to ask? If so, note these as prayer requests.

Prayer Time

Take turns having each person in your small group share prayer requests, then close your time by praying over these requests. Make a special note to pray over Jack’s Basket and their work. Optionally, a volunteer can take notes and send them to group members or share them in such a way that everyone can edit and access them. This allows your group to continue praying over these requests throughout the week.
